SAARC secretariat donates money for Uttarakhand victims
Kathmandu, July 16 : Expressing sorrow over the loss of lives and damage caused by floods in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, the Secretariat of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in Kathmandu Tuesday donated money for the victims.
$1,249 was collected from all serving staff in the secretariat who contributed a part of their monthly salaries.
Secretary General of SAARC Ahmed Saleem handed over a cheque to Indian Ambassador to Nepal Jayant Prasad.
Saleem said he and his colleagues at the SAARC Secretariat were deeply saddened over the loss of lives and property.
"Secretary general praised the bravery and unity that the people of India have demonstrated at these tragic moments and expressed confidence that the country and the people of India would soon be able to overcome the suffering caused by this unprecedented calamity," a statement issued by the SAARC Secretariat read.
The contribution will go to the Indian government's relief fund. Earlier, SAARC Secretariat also made similar contribution for Nepal's flood victims through the Prime Minister Relief Fund, Nepal.(IANS)
