Mahindra reveals new HyAlfa three wheeler at 2012 Auto Expo

Mahindra reveals new HyAlfa three wheeler at 2012 Auto ExpoIndia auto major, Mahindra and Mahindra has showcased a new `HyAlfa', which is the world's first hydrogen fuelled 3-wheeler, at the ongoing 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi.

The vehicle is being developed under a $1 million DELHY-3W project. The project, which will take about three years to complete, is being funded by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies (UNIDO-ICHET).

The project also includes Air Products USA, which has provided the hydrogen fuelling station for this vehicle. The company has installed a hydrogen refueling station in Pragati Maidan. Mahindra claims that HyAlfa runs for 80 km with 1kg of hydrogen.

The copany is aiming ot promote the fuel which will help reduce pollution as it does not have carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of sulphur and particulates.

Dr. Pawan Goenka, president of automotive and farm equipment sectors, Mahindra & Mahindra said that the Indian major is aiming to offer an alternative fuel technology solutions and that HyAlfa is a part of the initiative. He also said that the company had prepared 15 vehicles for integration of the optimised engine, storage system, fuelling system and safety features for the vehicle.

The General Manager(R & D), Mahindra & Mahindra, Dr. Mathew Abraham said, "The HyAlfa is the first vehicle of its kind in the world. It runs on nothing but compressed hydrogen gas and is incredibly engineered to run with absolutely zero emissions, which makes it a pleasure to drive on congested city roads."
