Maruti turns towards HybridsIn the wake of the environmental concerns, the market leader in the passenger car category has recently turned its focus towards the hybrid category. It is to be mentioned here that players like General Motors, Nissan and Toyota are very aggressive in making this technology popular worldwide, Maruti is trying to show that why India is also a potential market for the category. For the record, the auto major has delivered aptly on its promise to showcase its hybrid technology during the Commonwealth Games.

The company has recently showcased the prototypes of hybrid SX4 and electric Eeco for the Games.

The company officials said that this was the result of the first phase of the hybrid plans of Maruti Suzuki and the company will now be looking at reducing the cost of the technology. I. V Rao, managing executive officer (engineering), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd said that the second phase will be to discuss with the technology providers in order to make the technology more viable for the end consumer. The company is surely eying the hybrid technology now to cash-in once the category gains consumer acceptability with the Indian consumer.
