MDMK chief Vaiko wants UN to intervene in Sri LankaChennai /Coimbatore, July 25 : Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) chief V. Gopalswamy has urged the UN to intervene in Sri Lanka for the resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the island nation.

"The serious sufferings of Eelam Tamils in the island of Sri Lanka is not an internal problem of the island. It is the universal problem of the human rights. It is high time for the United Nations to intervene," said Gopalswamy.

Gopalswamy or Vaiko staged a protest in Chennai along with hundreds of party activists Meanwhile, law students'' community began a signature campaign in Coimbatore for the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils.

Sri Lankan Tamils have historical and cultural links with about 60 million Tamils in Tamil Nadu and their fate has political repercussions in India.

The Sri Lankan Government declared victory over LTTE in May. (ANI)
