Message from Pope Francis makes waves on Twitter, calls for Urgent Action to Combat Climate Change

The controversial venture of Pope Francis into the field of climate change now has several tweets following the recently published encyclical. During the last six days, the Papal account on Twitter has over two dozen tweets that warn of the earth increasingly becoming to look like ‘an immense pile of filth’, thus calling for an instantaneous action to curb the climate change menace.

The recent Twiplomacy’s review of world leaders’ Twitter accounts has accorded the Pope’s Twitter account to be one of the most influential on Twitter with 19.6 million followers across his different accounts.

The Pope Francis’ message in English alone has been reported to be re-tweeted nearly 30,000 times. The twitter mania follows the Pope Francis’ encyclical named ‘Laudato Si, On Care for Our Common Home’ which was released on June 18, appealing countrymen for an immediate dialogue on shaping the planet since the Pope believes that many efforts to seek concrete solutions to the environmental crisis had proved ineffective due to general lack of interest in such issues.

The pope’s message has motivated several other statements, with Dalai Lama tweeting, “Since climate change and the global economy now affect us all, we have to develop a sense of the oneness of humanity”.

President Obama has also stated his admiration for pope’s decision, saying that Pope Francis has given a clarion message that it’s high time to act to save the world for generations to come, otherwise climate change will significantly reduce the chances of our children, and our children’s children, to lead a quality life.
