Seventy-three years after British misspelled ‘Orissa’, the eastern state will get its correct name: ‘Odisha’.

On Thursday, the cabinet approved the state government’s proposal to rename ‘Orissa’ ‘Odisha’ and the ‘Oriya’ language ‘Odia’.

Last year, the Orissa cabinet had asked the central government to amend Schedule 1 of the Constitution that lists state names.

The state is called Udisa (Hindi) and Orissa (English), and the language Udiya (Hindi) and Oriya (English) in the Constitution.

The stage government had said that the correct names were Odisha and Odia, respectively.

To formalise the changes, the Centre is expected to introduce a bill to amend the Constitution in the winter session of Parliament. “The new name will be effective once the approved amendment bill is notified,” said a government official who did not want to be identified.

Orissa was made a separate province, with Cuttack as its capital, in 1936. Bhubaneswar was named the new capital in 1956. Three years ago, the Centre had approved the renaming of Uttaranchal as Uttarakhand, after a similar demand was rejected in 2002.

In the past two decades many cities have been renamed in the country. So, Bombay is now Mumbai, Calcutta is Kolkata and Bangalore is Bengaluru.
