'New York' Ends Dry Spell, Earn Rs 35 Cr In Opening WeekendAfter a long dry spell of nearly three months at the BO, here's something to cheer for Bollywood.

Yash Raj films' 'New York', which hit theaters last week has grossed Rs 35 crore in its three day first weekend.

'New York', directed by filmmaker Kabir Khan, was released worldwide on June 26, has grossed Rs 35 crore worldwide during its three-day opening weekend, breaking all the earlier opening weekend collection records for 2009.

The film which features Bollywood hunk John Abraham, beautiful Katrina Kaif, the talented Neil Nitin Mukesh and Irrfan Khan is based on the post-9/11 events in the United States, has also had an impressive opening across all markets.

In a press release, YRF said: "Yash Raj Films ended 2008 with its highest grossing film 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi', and has started 2009 with a bang."

The release further added that 'New York' has opened at the number three slot on the Australian charts and at number ten in the UK this weekend.

The movie, which released on 900 screens worldwide, has also been the top weekend earner in the UAE for 2009.

'New York' is a modern-day story of friendship set against the larger than life backdrop of a city often described as the centre of the world. Omar (Neil Nitin Mukesh) has gone abroad for the first time in his life and soon enough he begins to see and love America through the eyes of his American friends Sam (John Abraham) and Maya
(Katrina Kaif).

However, the beautiful lives of these three friends turned upside down by larger events beyond their control in the post-9/11 scenario.

Trade experts do feel that the film could go on to be among the biggest grossers of the year.
