New York Residents reminded of Dangers of West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus has been detected in two counties. Since its detection, public health officials in New York State have been warning people about the dangers posed by mosquitoes. There are many steps that people can take to prevent being infected.

The virus has been detected in mosquitoes trapped in Rockland and Suffolk counties. It is for the first time that the disease has been detected in the state. Authorities concerned said that people can take simple steps to reduce the risk posed by West Nile virus.

Councilwoman Colleen Morrone, Councils liaison to the Department of Intercommunity Health, said, “The best intervention is prevention. If you are going to be outside, remember to use insect repellent containing DEET according to label instructions — especially during dawn and dusk — and wear long sleeves and light-colored clothing”.

Intercommunity Health Director Maureen Hennessey, who looks after the West Nile surveillance program in Delaware County, said that a West Nile surveillance program has been launched in Delaware County and no mosquito has been tested positive for the virus.

Hennessey said that staff has been working to keep the mosquitoes under control. Hennessey suggested that people should clean the standing water.

Tips to remove standing water include remove tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots and water-holding containers. Discarded tires should be kept at one place. Clean swimming pools that are not being used and chlorinate them.
