Greater Noida, Nov 1 - Former Formula One World champion Jackie Stewart says India now must focus on producing a bunch of world-class drivers after the resounding success of the inaugural Indian Grand Prix. The "Flying Scotsman" also feels that it is time F1 had a female driver on the grid.
Brussels calls for longer, better-paid maternity leave

Brussels - European women should be given longer and better-paid maternity leave and be allowed to ask for flexible working hours when they return to work, the European Union's executive body said Friday.
"Only 65.5 per cent of women with dependent children are in work, compared with 91.7 per cent of men. Our proposals to improve maternity leave will help women to combine work and family life," EU equal-opportunities commissioner Vladimir Spidla said.

Merkel cuts short trip to Afghanistan

Termez, Uzbekistan - German Chancellor Angela Merkel left Afghanistan Tuesday, after bad weather forced her to cut short a surprise visit to German troops in the region.
The chancellor, who had to cancel a planned excursion to the German military base in Feyzabad due to bad flying conditions, departed Tuesday morning from the Termez military base in neighbouring Uzbekistan.
Merkel's two-day visit came shortly after NATO set a new strategy for Afghanistan, placing a greater emphasis on reconstruction, alongside its military fight against the Taliban.

Two arrested for theft at Gamdevi

Two men working as domestic help were arrested on Monday by the Gamdevi police for allegedly stealing jewels and cash worth Rs 40 lakh a day before Diwali.
Sanjay Diwadkar, senior police inspector at Gamdevi police station, said that on Diwali night, diamond merchant Manikchand Kothari was getting ready for Lakhmi pooja when he found jewellery and cash worth Rs 40 lakh missing from his cupboard.
Living on the 13th floor of Shreepati Arcade at Nana Chowk, he had six men working as domestic help for his family of three. Of the six, Chandu Yadav (30) and Prakash Pratiyar (17) were prime suspects.

More Iberia flights cancelled as cabin crew strike continues

Madrid - Spain's biggest airline, Iberia, cancelled 185 flights on Wednesday as cabin crew staged their fourth one-day work stoppage over pay, sources of the carrier said.
The cancelled flights included 120 national and 65 international ones, affecting some 20,000 passengers. A similar number of flights was called off on Tuesday.
Madrid airport was reported to be functioning normally except for the complaints of some passengers at Iberia counters. The airline has offered affected passengers the possibility of changing their tickets or getting their money back.

Warming of North Atlantic more due to natural variability, than global warming
Washington, Jan 4: A new report has claimed that the warming of the North Atlantic Ocean’s surface waters is more attributable to natural variability, than global warming.
The report suggests that though human-caused global warming may be affecting recent ocean heating trends, the data collected by researchers can’t support that view for the North Atlantic.
“It is premature to conclusively attribute these regional patterns of heat gain to greenhouse warming,” said the researchers.
Pakistan groups Taliban in Black, Grey and White categories

The police investigation manual sees black and gray categories of Taliban prisoners as a serious threat to national security, while the ‘white category’ Talibanis are not considered very harmful.
On Friday, NWEF Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti announced that the only ‘white category Taliban prisoners’ would be released as part of the peace deal in Swat.
“I have directed the home secretary to look into the cases of those prisoners who are in the white category. We will not free prisoners in black and gray categories,” the Daily Times quoted Hoti, as saying.

Now, a group of scientists has delved into individuals' psyche to know why they have different freshness standards at home.
The new study has detailed the reasons behind why consumers tend to consume products that are past their expiration dates if they are in their refrigerators than if they are in a store.
For the study, the authors Sankar Sen and Lauren G. Block (both Baruch College/CUNY) explored a phenomenon termed the "endowment effect," meaning that owning a product increases a consumer''s valuation of it.
