No Semenya comments from IAAF until final verdict

No Semenya comments from IAAF until final verdictHamburg  - The ruling athletics body IAAF will not comment on the case of South African runner Caster Semenya until a final verdict has been reached on the results of her gender verification test.

"No decision on the case will be communicated until the IAAF has had the opportunity to complete this examination. We do not expect to make a final decision on this case before the next meeting of the IAAF Council which takes place in Monaco on November 20-21," the IAAF said in a statement on Friday.

"Please note that there will be no further comments from the IAAF on Caster Semenya until that time."

The statement came after an Australian news report, citing a source close to the investigation, said that the tests revealed evidence that Semenya was a hermaphrodite.

The IAAF has confirmed that it received the test results, but that it must must now come to a conclusion after talking to the athlete, medical experts and lawyers.

The IAAF has no rule for such a scenario, which could for instance make it complicated to strip her of the medal. The whole of South Africa has rallied behind the athlete and a news conference there on the test results was set for later Friday.

Semenya burst onto the scene this year. Her fast times and masculine appearance prompted the IAAF to request the gender verification test. The news broke just hours before the 800m final at the world in Berlin on August 19. (dpa)
