Safina wins Madrid to notch second straight clay trophy
Madrid - Russian Dinara Safina solidified her claim on her top WTA ranking with a second straight title Sunday, with the top seed winning the Madrid Masters 6-2, 6-4 over Dane Caroline Wozniacki.
Top seed Safina, who will go into Roland Garros on the top seeding, produced her 28th victory over the season versus just six losses, spending one hour, 44 minutes in following up her Rome title success of last weekend.
The younger sister of Marat Safin played the Stuttgart final two weeks ago, losing to Svetlana Kuznetsova before beating her countrywoman a week later in Rome for that trophy.
Safina has established herself as one of the favourites for the French Open which begins next Sunday - if she can hold her big-match nerve on the larger stage.
Wozniacki, 19, who will reach the top ten for the first time on Monday, saved a match point in the penultimate game before Safina closed it out a game later. The winner annulled all five break points she faced.
Safina has won 14 of 15 matches since lifting the number one ranking last April 20. (dpa)
