Swedish foreign minister visits Afghanistan
Stockholm - Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt was in Afghanistan on Friday for talks with President Hamid Karzai and other officials.
Bildt's arrival coincided with reports that some 50 Swedish ISAF troops were engaged in a firefight overnight in northern Afghanistan. However, the foreign minister and Swedish military sources said no Swedish troops were injured.
Sweden currently holds the presidency of the European Union. Bildt's visit was reported on the EU presidency website, as well as on Bildt's blog.
During his two-day visit, Bildt was to discuss how the EU would improve its efforts in Afghanistan and coordinate with the United Nations and the United States.
Meetings were planned with EU election observers ahead of next month's elections. Bildt was, along with US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke, also to visit a European Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT).
