Junior doctors in England begin second 24-hour strike

Junior doctors in England are starting another day long strike protesting the latest contract that the health secretary Jeremy Hunt has been threatening to impose on them.

Around 2,884 non-urgent operations have got cancelled, and an unknown number of consultations at outpatient clinics, in front of the show of strength by many of 45,000 junior doctors in England.

The walkout held on Wednesday, followed the collapse of last-ditch talks between the British Medical Association, NHS Employers and the Department of Health regarding the shape of the latest contract under which all juniors in England have to operate August onwards.

CTI BioPharma's IND for pacritinib placed on full clinical hold

CTI BioPharma Corp said that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has placed a full clinical hold on its investigational latest drug application for pacritinib. The company said that it has taken back its application for the experimental blood cancer drug and is going to review the safety and efficacy data.

The regulator also suggested that CTI should request for a meeting before it submits its response to the full clinical hold.

Earlier on February 4, the FDA had put a partial hold on pacritinib, citing excess mortality and other bad events in pacritinib-treated patients.

As part of the full clinical hold, all patients on pacritinib should discontinue it right away and no patients can get enrolled or begin pacritinib as early or crossover treatment.

Arctic and Antarctic Ice Extents Decline In January 2016

January 2016 proved to be the lowest every January for the Arctic sea ice shelves due to the region being surrounded with warm temperatures, while the cold air managed to rise up to mid-latitudes owing to low air pressure. Arctic sea ice coverage was 5.2 million square miles (13.53 million square kilometers) on an average in the month of January 2016. The figure is 402,000 square miles (1.04 million square kilometers) less than the average coverage for this month from 1981 to 2010.

According to a new research, bacteria that are formed completely of one cell are capable of seeing. The bacterium utilizes its entire body as a tiny camera lens to concentrate on light. The sense of vision possessed by the bacteria is not vague; in fact, it can accurately detect the right location.

According to Conrad Mullineaux of the University of Freiburg in Germany and Queen Mary University of London, the whole thought of bacteria seeing their world in the same manner in which we do is quite stimulating.

Volunteers spot baby green sea turtle that wasn't green

A surprising discovery has come into light wherein volunteers surveying turtle nests in Australia have spotted a baby green sea turtle that wasn't actually green.

Coolum and North Shore Coast Care volunteers were counting the empty turtle shells on Castaways Beach for making an estimation of how many green sea turtles, also called Pacific sea turtles, had hatched, making it to the ocean.

The workers were hopeful that the nest will hatch on Friday, but on their arrival, they discovered a tiny albino hatchling on its back.

While speaking to ABC News Australia, volunteer group president Linda Warneminde said that none of them have ever faced or seen anything like that earlier, due to which, all of them were a bit taken aback.

Wolf species have distinctive howling repertoires functioning like dialects, Study finds

The biggest study ever performed on canid howling found that wolf species have unique howling repertoires, functioning like dialects.

A team of researchers from the United States, United Kingdom, India and Spain ran over 2,000 distinct recorded howls from 13 canid species and subspecies via a software algorithm, boiling them down to 21 howl types on the basis of pitch and other characteristics. The canid family consists of wolves, jackals, and domestic dogs.

They discovered that distinct wolf species use the howl types in ways, specific to them. For example, timber wolves use a preponderance of low and flat howls in contrast of red wolves that uses higher vocals.
