Scientists plan to produce Oxygen on Mars from bacteria

Space agencies and scientists have been studying Mars for many decades. Rovers that are sent to the Red Planet have provided evidence which stated that the planet could someday host life. Establishing human colonies on Mars could take several decades, but scientists have found that the planet contain methane, which is the main component of natural gas.

According to Untied States space agency the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), there could be fruitful human missions to the Red Planet soon as Techshot a research and development firm in Indiana, is going to help the agency with the effort to produce oxygen on the Red Planet. As per the space agency, if the plans succeed, future missions to the planet will be able to proceed without oxygen tanks.

Spring-Loaded Jaws of Trap-Jaw Ants Act as Defensive Weapon

Spring-loaded jaws of Trap-jaw ants have an amazing weapon i.e. their mouth, which is capable of snapping shut as fast as 60 meters/second (134 miles/hr) and can generate forces over 300 times their body weight.

These ants are ferocious predators of termites and other small insects. They can also catapult themselves into the air with a jaw snap.

Jaws that snap shut with extreme force can have both an offensive and defensive function, said researchers. The jaws can even toss an away during a fight; and when under attack, a colony of ants fling themselves around disorienting attackers.

Farming Main Reason behind Male Dominance in Several Prehistoric Societies: Study

A recently conducted study revealed that men and women might have shared equal status in several prehistoric societies. The study researchers stated that male dominance rose with the adoption of agriculture and excess of resources that came with the changing lifestyle.

Gender equality might appear to be a new topic, but researchers believe that equality between sexes might have provided a survival advantage to group of early humans. It may have helped early humans to develop new social and language skills, theorized researchers.

Investigators believe that females had influence equal to men in decisions regarding where their groups lived, and with whom.

Beekeeper, farmers worried as honeybee colonies suffer annual losses of 42%

Queen bees are common in the center of a hive at a commercial breeder near Vacaville, California. They are sent to beekeepers all over the country to support hives that are used in the pollination of agricultural crops.

On Wednesday, the US Department of Agriculture reported that managed honeybee colonies have suffered annual losses of 42%, with summer declines outstripping winter losses for the first time.

According to the department, the declines were less steep as compared to those linked to the mysterious widespread collapse of bee colonies, first recognized in 2006, but have remained troublesome as have driven up the prices for crop pollination services.

Experience Akron Zoo’s ‘vanishing’ endangered species this weekend

On Friday and through the weekend, the Akron Zoo along with 229 accredited members of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, are coming together to mark the 10th anniversary of Endangered Species Day. They will ask visitors what it would be like if they no longer get to see or learn from animals.

To stage the possibility, zoo staff blocked off the large window in the endangered Sumatran tigers exhibit to show the ‘vanishing’ breed of tigers. They opened only a handful of holes through which guests were able to view the animals.

For over 1,000 Northeast Ohio School children and their 300 adult chaperones visited the zoo on Friday. The exhibit left little ones jostling and clamoring to claim the few spots from where they could see the magnificent beasts.

One of Antarctica’s largest ice shelves likely to Disintegrate Completely before Decade’s End

Earlier this week, it was unveiled that Antarctic peninsula’s ice shelf, Larsen C, is melting from top and underneath. Researchers from British Antarctic Survey and several other research centers have raised concerns by affirming that its reducing thickness could pose a risk to its stability.

Now, another bad news has unveiled that the remnants of the Larsen B ice shelf, which majorly had collapsed back in 2002, can soon disappear. A new study by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the University of California at Irvine said the Larsen B is melting at faster pace.
