One-Third of American Adults hit by Dangerous Metabolic Syndrome

Americans are affected by metabolic acid at a much larger scale today than in the past, found a new study. The study showed metabolic syndrome has become the plight of nearly 35% American adults and over half of American seniors. This condition is caused by various metabolic risk factors like increased blood pressure, a high blood sugar level, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels.

The presence of all these things makes a person highly likely to develop deadly health problems, like heart attack, stroke and even diabetes. According to the American Heart Association, 34% of adults are affected by it. The incidences of metabolic syndrome have increased in recent years. The prevalence sought a rise from 32.9% to 34.7% from 2011 to 2012.

“While it is disturbing that we did not see a decrease in the prevalence, it is somewhat reassuring that the prevalence appears to have leveled off since 2007”, said American Heart Association president Elliott Antman, MD, of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

The body gets predisposed to cardiovascular illness and even death once such symptoms are combined including obesity, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

The American College of Cardiology president Dr. Kim Williams Sr. said this is set to become an even more pervasive epidemic, requiring the American public to make lifestyle changes in the young age to ensure lower calorie, lower fat, more plant-based nutrition, and consistent moderate exercise. The study details have been published in the Journal of American Medical Association.
