Only English-speaking immigrants can get a public sector job in Britain

Only English-speaking immigrants can get a public sector job in BritainUnder a Labor Party plan unveiled on Monday by Prime Minister Gordon Brown, only English-speaking immigrants could get a public sector job in Britain.

The English language requirement currently covers only doctors from outside the European Union, teachers and police officers.

But if the Labor Party retains control of Parliament, the party would seek to require testing the English skills of any new arrivals wanting government jobs, such as social workers, center staff, community support officers and nurses.

The Times of London reported that Brown offered up the expansion of the English language requirement to address voter concern over immigration as part of the party's manifesto heading into next month's elections. (With Inputs from Agencies)
