An amusing as well as thought-provoking story, exploring human relationships with sensitivity par excellence --- that’s ‘Paa’, the small budget film produced by Amitabh Bachchan’s AB Corporation, and directed by R Balakrishnan.
The story of ‘Paa’ revolves around the 12-year-old mischievous boy, Auro, who is suffering from progeria - a rare genetic condition that accelerates the process of ageing.
Though Auro (Amitabh Bachchan) is mentally the age of any child his age, physically he is like a 60-year-old man. Auro’s father Amol (Abhishek Bachchan) is a politician, and his mother Vidya (Vidya Balan) is a doctor.
A mother-son story, ‘Paa’ has Vidya playing single-mother to Auro, whom she raises with her mother’s (Arundhati Nag) help. Amol, Vidya’s college boy friend, ditches her on learning that she is pregnant and suggests an abortion, saying that he is not ready for marriage; and that he wants to become a politician like his father (Paresh Rawal).
Many years later, Amol, who becomes a Member of Parliament, happens to meet his son Auro at a school event - both of them being unaware of their father-son relationship.
Dealing the trials and tribulations of Auro’s family, ‘Paa’ is a well-written and well-directed emotionally-touching film, which keeps the viewers amused throughout without getting melodramatic. The performances from the all actors, especially Amitabh as Auro, are superlative.
