Islamabad - Pakistani troops and a pro-government militia killed 11 Taliban fighters in separate actions in country's north-western Swat valley and its adjoining district of Dir during last 24 hours, the Pakistani army said on Monday
According to a military statement 10 "terrorists" died and six were apprehended when tribal militia, locally known as lashkar, carried out search operations in three areas of Dir.
The residents in Dir have formed a militia against the Taliban after they attacked civilian targets with more than half a dozen suicide and other strikes. The volunteers have regained control of many villages from the Taliban during their more than six-week campaign.
Separately, government forces killed one Taliban fighter and arrested two more during a search operation in the Khawzakhela area of Swat, a scenic valley located 140 kilometres north-west of Islamabad.
Seven militant hideouts were also demolished in the action.
Pakistani troops are wrapping up 10-week offensive to expel the Taliban from Swat and three neighbouring districts, including Dir.
So far over 1,700 militants and 160 soldiers have been killed in the army offensive in the region, known for mountainous terrain and thickly forested valleys.
The fighting displaced nearly two million people, who have started going back to their homes after army took control of major towns. But violence continues, as Taliban are conducting guerilla raids on security forces from their hideouts. (dpa)
