People living longer, but also sicker

According to a new study, life expectancy has increased in Americans and other people in the world. But researchers added that this long life includes several ailments. The study was carried out by researchers from the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

The researchers found that people living long life with several kinds of disabilities and illnesses. The study has been published in The Lancet medical journal.

Scientists examined 306 diseases and injuries in more than 180 countries. By making use of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2013, the researchers looked at data for years of life lost as a result of premature mortality, age- specific immortality, and years spent with disability in all the countries included in the study.

The scientists found that global health is getting better. It is improving with arrival of treatments for HIV/AIDS and malaria, in addition to other infectious diseases and the life expectancy of both genders has increased by 6.2 years in the period of 13 years.

According to the researchers, "Health life expectancy take into account not just mortality but also the impact of non-fatal conditions and summarises years lived with disability and years lost due to premature mortality. The increase in healthy life expectancy has not been as dramatic". It is the result of the growth of life expectancy, so people are living for more time with illness and disability, they added.
