Thessaloniki, Greece  - Tyson Gay of the United States beat Jamaica's Asafa Powell in the men's 100 metres at the World Athletics Final in Thessaloniki, Greece on Saturday.

Gay clocked 9.88 seconds with a late surge to edge Powell (9.90) and Darvis Patton of the United States (10.00).

Gay took advantage of the absence of Jamaican superstar Usain Bolt, who was a spectator in the stadium ahead of his participation in the 200m on Sunday.

Meanwhile double world and Olympic champion Kenenisa Bekele outsprinted Bernard Lagat of the United States with victory over 3,000 metres.

Powell and five other Jamaicans to be withdrawn from worlds Berlin - Jamaica wants former 100 metres world record holder Asafa Powell, women's 100m Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser and four other athletes out of its world championship team, the ruling body IAAF said on Wednesday.

The Jamaican federation has asked the IAAF to scrap the six athletes from the entry lists and to bar them from the official team hotel.

The athletes are reportedly no longer welcome on the team over disciplinary reasons, after they did not take part in a team training camp.
