Russian treasures on display in new Hermitage AmsterdamAmsterdam  - Dutch Queen Beatrix and Russian President Dmitri Medvedev are due to attend a festive opening Friday of the new renovated Dutch subdivision of Russia's Hermitage museum.

The exhibition now showing at the Amsterdam Hermitage, to be open to the public starting Saturday, will be of Russian Court life in the 19th century.

The Russian Hermitage in St Petersburg is one of the biggest museums in the world, comprising more than 3 million artifacts, many of which are kept in storage due to lack of space.

Dutch Queen attends WWII memorial service amid tight security

Queen BeatrixAmsterdam  - Members of the Dutch public applauded the country's monarch, Queen Beatrix, on Monday as she arrived at a World War II memorial service, days after an attacker had ploughed into a royal event in his car killing six.

Queen Beatrix arrived with Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and his wife Princess Maxima at the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam, ahead of a national WWII ceremony which commemorates the country's war dead.

Officials said that security measures had been stepped up at the site, and that snipers were in position on rooftops overlooking Dam Square, where the ceremony was to take place.

Queen Beatrix cancels march-past after accidentAmsterdam - A serious road accident which left at least 14 injured Thursday overshadowed a public appearance of The Netherlands' Queen Beatrix.

A black car broke through barriers, injured bystanders and crashed in to a monument in the city of Apeldoorn not far from where members of the royal family were celebrating Queen's Day.

Beatrix cancelled a ceremonial march-past which had been scheduled in memory of her mother the former Queen Juliana who died in 2004 to mark what would have been her 100th birthday.
