Sydney - Women's seeds stormed through into the quarter-finals as Lleyton Hewitt made a typical fighting debut on Tuesday at the Medibank International.
The four-time champion, who is playing only his second event since hip surgery in August, had to spend two hours in baking summer heat to overcome Julien Benneteau 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
The unseeded Australian, trying to lift a ranking which has fallen to 71st, fell behind 1-4 in the first set, which Benneteau won. But Hewitt scrambled back into contention to earn the hard-fought win, through 13 winners and seven aces.

President Viktor Yushchenko was unequivocal shortly before flying to Geneva in February to sign the final agreement on Ukraine entrance into the WTO, predicting as a
1.7 per cent bump to GDP, and a dramatic downturn in consumer prices, from Kiev's accession to the WTO.
"These are (economic) results that no one can oppose," Yushchenko said.

Four militants killed in Indian Kashmir

New Delhi - At least four suspected separatist militants were killed in two separate gunbattles with security forces in India-administered Kashmir on Thursday, news reports said.
Three militants were killed in a clash that took place in the mountainous border district of Poonch, 200 kilometres north-west of the state's winter capital Jammu, in the early hours of Thursday, the IANS news agency reported.

New York - New York City authorities considered Monday to close schools to prevent the swine flu from striking children after eight students at a Queens high school were confirmed sick of disease, reports said. The US government has declared a national public health emergency after tests confirmed 40 people in the United States, including the eight students in New York, have mild cases of the flu.
The Saint Francis high school in Fresh Meadows, Queens, where the eight students were found sick, was closed Monday and Tuesday to allow cleaning crews to sanitize the school.
Australian tries to drive off in taxi after fatal Hong Kong crash

Hong Kong - A 22-year-old Australian was being held in custody ward by Hong Kong police after attempting to drive a taxi from the scene of a fatal crash, a news report said Sunday.
Kelsey Michael Mudd, 22, was front seat passenger in the taxi which careered through a crash barrier and collided with three other cars, killing the taxi's 57-year-old driver.
Paramedics were treating Mudd at the scene early Saturday morning when he suddenly attempted to drive the taxi into oncoming traffic, the South China Morning Post reported.

Now, he has gone one step forward, and said that she wouldn't make a good vice-president because the job requires "real leadership."
"I don't think it's possible. And I think if we had real leadership - as we do with Barack Obama - in the number-two spot as well, it'd be enormously helpful," The New York Daily News quoted him, as saying.
