Price distortion responsible for clean energy’s slow adoption: Montek

Montek-Singh-AhluwaliaGreen energy sources have so far failed to gain momentum they cost more than conventional sources, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said.

Speaking at the fourth Clean Energy Ministerial on Wednesday, Mr. Ahluwalia said that green energy would not be chosen even when it became competitive, because of price distortion.

He admitted that the price distortion was due to subsidizing of conventional energy sources.

The Planning Commission Deputy Chairman said, "Today, since we are subsidising conventional energy, even when green energy becomes competitive, it will not be chosen. It is because of price distortion, which is not easy to remove."

He, however, claimed that the government was in favour of creating a feasible and highly competitive domestic production base for clean energy by incentivising clean energy sources.

Mr. Ahluwalia pointed out that China is also a developing country, but it has invested 10 times more than India in clean energy sources. He stressed that India needed to work on clean energy now so that it could be in a better position after twenty years.

U. S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu, who was also present at the Clean Energy Ministerial, said the growth on green energy wasn't fast enough, and that the energy produced today is as dirty as it was two decades ago.
