Kabul - A suicide bomber in police uniform blew himself up inside police headquarters in northern Afghanistan, killing one US soldier and wounding seven other people including police officers, police said Monday.

"One American soldier was killed and two others were wounded in the blast this morning," Jaweed Basharat, spokesman for provincial police chief told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

He said four Afghan police officers and one child were also wounded in the Monday's blast.

The bomber, who was in police uniform, tried to enter the police chief's office in Puli Khumri, the capital of northern Baghlan province, and detonated himself when he was stopped by the guards.

Islamabad - A meeting of Pakistani and Afghan political and tribal leaders started on Monday against the backdrop of the recent strategy shift by the US allies to bring peace to Afghanistan through dialogue with the Taliban militants.

"We must not shut the doors of negotiations to those sons of the soil willing to forsake the path of violence. With a patient ear we must listen to them and let them be heard," said Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi as he opened the talks in Islamabad.

Kabul - Two foreign nationals shot dead in Kabul Saturday were killed by their Afghan guard, who then committed suicide, the Afghan Interior Ministry said Sunday.

The South African and British nationals who worked as director and deputy director for DHL, an international shipping company, were shot dead in front of their office in downtown Kabul.

"Our investigation showed that one of the Afghan guards, who was

on duty yesterday morning, opened fire on DHL's director and deputy director as their vehicle reached the office, killing both on the spot," Interior Ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary said.

Islamabad - Pakistani army troops killed at least eight rebels Sunday as they continued with their push to root out Islamist militants in the restive Bajaur tribal district bordering Afghanistan, media reports said.

Ground troops backed by helicopter gunships and artillery pounded militant positions in the Tang Khata and Chaharmang areas of Bajaur, which is considered a stronghold of al-Qaeda and Taliban militants, the private Aaj television channel reported.
