Karnataka women seek 50 percent quota in local bodies

Bangalore, Dec 20 - Women members of local government bodies in Karnataka have sought 50 percent representation for them in the three-tier 'panchayat' (local council) institutions across the state.
In a memorandum to Chief Minister B. S. Yeddyurappa Sunday, a joint organisation of the members said the state government should reserve 50 percent of the total seats for women in the local bodies' elections due March 2010.

Hong Kong - Government lawyers in Hong Kong were Monday considering whether to prosecute two bodyguards looking after the daughter of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe for alleged assaults.
The Zimbabwean man and woman are accused of assaulting photographers Colin Galloway, 46, and Tim O'Rourke, 45, on February 13 outside a luxury house, where Bona Mugabe is living while on a university course in Hong Kong.

Panaji, Sept 12 : British national Fiona Mackeown, the mother of murdered teenager Scarlet Eden Keeling, who was summoned by Goa''s Women and Child Welfare Department, failed to appear before the authorities today.
Fiona said that she did not have adequate time to make alternative arrangements for the safety and care of her other children.

Dhaka - Bangladesh's Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a High Court verdict that confirmed the death sentences of 12 former military officers for the assassination of the country's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, dismissing appeals filed by five of the convicts.
After hearing the appeals for 29 days filed by five condemned convicts challenging death sentences, a special bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Tafazzul Islam delivered the verdict in a crowded court amid heightened security, state counsel Anisul Haq said after the court handed down the judgement.

New Delhi, Nov 21 : The External Affairs Ministry on Friday expressed reservations over Indian cricket team touring Pakistan.
The series to be played from January 5 to February 19 includes three Tests, five One-day Internationals and one Twenty20 International but is in doubt because the Indian government is yet to clear the tour.
The Ministry fears that any untoward eventuality during the tour can decimate all the efforts made in building up the Indo-Pak relations.

New York - The Sudanese government's expulsion of humanitarian organizations has put the lives of 1 million people at risk, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Tuesday in a report to the United Nations Security Council.
Sudan expelled 13 international organizations in early March from the restive Darfur region and dissolved three Sudanese non- governmental organizations working in North Sudan, after the International Criminal Court indicted Sudanese President Omar al- Bashir for war crimes.

Rubber yesterday traded with the positive node and settled 0.9% up at 22300 buoyed by good demand and a rally overseas, though profit-taking may limit the surge. Demand from tyre companies was intact despite record high prices. A few farmers were holding back supplies expecting a further rise in prices. The spot price of most traded RSS-4 rubber (ribbed smoked sheet) rose by 50 rupees to a record high of 21,500 rupees per 100 kg at the Kottayam market in the southern state of Kerala. Weather is relatively better in Kerala for tapping compared to November and December. In yesterday's trading session Rubber has touched the low of 22058 after opening at 22063, and finally settled at 22300.
BSkyB third quarter profit jumps to £286 million

British Sky Broadcasting Group Plc, a satellite TV group in UK, announced today that its third quarter profit beat the expectations of the company. BSkyB said that the excellent performance in the third quarter ended march was mainly attributable to the increased revenue in the period.
