U. S. researchers have revealed that despite the explosion of research and information on children with autism, there is much less research on adults with autism.

Case studies, programs and initiatives on adults with autism have been highlighted by a special issue of the Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation.

Paul Wehman of the Virginia Commonwealth University and editor in chief of the Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation said in a statement, "Young adults with autism are young adults first and individuals with autism second."

He further said, "They will have as much sensitivity as others to people being critical or being complimentary; they will enjoy the benefits of earning money and job promotion like anyone else; they will value friendships and romantic relationships like anybody else; they want to be independent and free to move around like all Americans."
