There is a ray hope for the students who appeared in CPMT-2009 and are in the waiting list.

On November 3, the Supreme Court will hear the plea of UP government over the objections of the Medical Council of India (MCI) to start academic session in the newly established Kannauj Medical College (KMC).

Once the Supreme Court gives green signal to the state government, 100 students will get admission in first year MBBS in KMC. The MCI had refused to grant permission to start the session on the ground that the posts of the teachers were lying vacant and college lacks infrastructure facilities.

Talking to HT, an officer of the Medical Education Department said along with appointing teachers the state government has provided all the facilities in the medical college to start the first year classes. The medical college is equipped with hospital, library, hostels, laboratories and classrooms.

“To counter the MCI decision the state government filed a special leave petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court”, he said.

“The state government had invested Rs 300 crore in the establishment of the Medical College. On senior posts of the teachers were recruited by UP Public Service Commission. On the junior posts the teachers were appointed on contract and through walk in interview. Some posts were filled with transferring teachers from other government run medical colleges”, he said.

The Medical Education Department has also geared up to start classes in Jalaun and Azamgarh medical colleges from next year. The construction of the buildings in these two medical colleges was in the final stage. “Once the hiccup over the Kannauj Medical College was over we would start appointing teaching and non- teaching staff in the two Medical Colleges,” an officer said.

State government has also decided to set up Medical Colleges at Banda, Ambedkar Nagar and Saharanpur. The state government was also contemplating to run few of these medical colleges on public private partnership.
