Mainz, Germany  - When registering for e-mail services or online networks, it is important to remember that a strong password is not the only thing you need to consider. The security question used to identify yourself in case of a lost password must also be strong to prevent hackers from gaining access via the back door.

Security company Sophos recommends going beyond the questions usually suggested by the service providers - favorite pet or mother's maiden name - and choosing an off-the-wall question whose answer only you would know.

The question is typically used when you forget your password. When answered correctly, the service provider then sends a new password to your secondary e-mail address. (dpa)
