Sensex Ends 55.24 Pts Up; Midcap Scrips Outperform

Midcap ScripsThe 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on Friday cmarked its closure on a flat note even as midcap stocks outperformed larger stocks.

The Sensex closed the day 17,558.71 after gaining 55.24 points as against its previous closure at 17,503.47.

In contrast, the broad-based Nifty ended at 5,278, up 0.45% from its last closure at 5,254.15.

Broader market indices outperformed the Sensex with the BSE midcap index closing 1% up and the BSE smallcap index gained 0.39%.

Gains were seen in real estate, automobiles, and healthcare scrips, whereas metal stocks saw huge selling activity.

The major gainers on the 30-scrip Sensex included Rel Infra, NTPA, Tata Motors and Hero Honda.

The major losers comprised Sun Pharma, Wipro, Tata Steel, and Grasim Ind.

News of the Greece administration firming up austerity measures to quickly secure a debt relief package from European nations assisted stocks gain in Asian bourses.

In Asia, the South Korean Kospi ended 0.76% up at 1,741.56, whereas Hong Kong's Hang Seng closed 1.59%up at 21,108.59.

The Japanese Nikkei also closed in the positive at 11,057.40. (With Inputs from Agencies)
