Skin transplant may cure vitiligo

Vitiligo-Skin-DiseaseA surgery known as melanocyte-keratinocyte transplantation or MKTP is believed to be a possible treatment for vitiligo as the tests showed 52 per cent recovery of the natural skin.

The experiments, which were done in Detroit, transferred healthy skin to 32 patients who were suffering from the vitiligo - a condition where patches occur on body due to loss of colour pigments.

The surgery was performed under local anesthesia at Henry Ford Hospital and it gave significant results. However, it still seeks a further research.

The conclusions stated that vitiligo patients with patches on one side of the body or on any one area of the body may benefit a lot from this procedure.

Dr Iltefat Hamzavi, the study's senior author said, "We need more studies using this technique including well-designed randomised controlled trials comparing this technique with other surgical interventions such as grafting".
