Sports drinks enhance diabetes chances

Sports-DrinksSports drinks with an extra hint of sugary content may act as a contributing factor to the soaring cases of diabetes, a research based study performed by the University of California, San Francisco revealed.

The researchers said that an estimated 100,000 or more new cases of diabetes could have been prevented if not for the sugary drinks, used for speedy recovery and increased athletic performance. These drinks include more than 120 calories per serving, and as the researchers say, are contributing to America's obesity epidemic.

Lead author Litsa Lambrakos explained, "We can demonstrate an association between daily consumption of sugared beverages and diabetes risk and translate this information into estimates of the current diabetes and cardiovascular diseases that can be attributed to the rise in consumption of these drinks."

As per Litsa, the researchers intend to stir up the general public against the negative health effects of consumption of such drinks over a period of time in order to prevent diseases like diabetes.
