Afridi, Waqar to appear as witnesses in spot-fixing case on ICC’s request

Lahore, Jan 2 : Pakistan’s ODI and Twenty20 captain Shahid Afridi and head coach Waqar Younis will appear as witnesses in the spot-fixing case before an anti-corruption tribunal, following a request from the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said it would allow Afridi and Waqar to appear at a hearing into the spot-fixing allegations during the coming week “either in person or through teleconference, depending on their convenience and subject to their professional commitments.”

The decision was taken after the ICC requested the board to direct both cricketers to appear at the hearing in Doha, Qatar.

“The ICC has requested the PCB to direct Afridi and Waqar to appear before the ICC anti-corruption tribunal to determine the guilt or otherwise of the three players who have been accused of serious violations,” the Daily Times quoted a PCB press release, as stating.

An ICC code of conduct tribunal will hear the spot-fixing charges levelled against Butt and pace bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif in January 2011.

The tainted trio were suspended pending an investigation into allegations that they arranged for deliberate no-balls to be delivered in the fourth test against England in August 2010.

“PCB is committed to root out corruption, in any form, from cricket and has a zero tolerance policy towards corruption,” the board said in a statement.

“The PCB is also keen to assist the ICC anti-corruption tribunal in determining in a fair and just manner the truth behind the serious allegations being made against the three Pakistan players,” it added. (ANI)
