Vienna - The Austrian football federation board was due to meet on Tuesday to start the process of finding a new coach within one month in the wake of Joseph Hickersberger's resignation the previous day.
"We want to present a new coach within three or four weeks," Friedrich Stickler, head of the Austrian Football Association, told national broadcaster ORF.
Possible candidates are led by Austria's team manager Andreas Herzog, a former international who also played in Germany at Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen.
The association had expected to prolong Hickersberger's engagement, as the coach had signaled his intention to stay on despite a first-round exit last week as Euro 2008 co-host.
But Hickersberger handed in his resignation in a telephone conversation with Stickler on Monday, citing personal reasons, Austria's football chief said.
"What we had agreed to is unfortunately no longer valid," Stickler said.
Austria's new coach will have to prepare the team for its game against France on September 6 in Vienna, Austria's first qualification game for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Hickersberger made his resignation public in a newspaper interview Monday.
"I am empty and tired, I need a timeout. I have to recharge batteries," the 60-year-old coach said. (dpa)
