Lahore, Jan. 14 : The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued a notice to former captain Wasim Akram to appear before it on January 27 in connection with the case accusing 19 doctors of negligence and dereliction of duty which purportedly caused Akram's wife, Huma Akram's death.
Justice Mian Saqib Nisar also directed Dr Abdul Basit, counsel for the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), to come up with arguments whether the council could take action against doctors simply on the directions of the National Assembly's standing committee even when the aggrieved doctors were not given an opportunity of a hearing, The Dawn reports.
It may be noted that Wasim had accused doctors, who treated his late wife Huma, of negligence.
However, Dr Kamaran Cheema, a doctor accused in Huma Wasim's death case, told the National Assembly Standing Committee on Health: "The matter was highlighted when Wasim Akram was asked to pay dues for his wife's treatment."
Challenging the inquiry report, Dr Cheema said the report was not based on actual facts and figures.
"Huma's death was caused by Muco Fungus and it was not possible to diagnose it in early stages," he had said.
The accused doctors also alleged that the inquiry report was totally wrong as it recommended cancelling the doctors' practice licences who did not treat Huma whereas many doctors who were involved in treating Huma were excluded from the list.
The committee was told that it was Wasim Akram's wish to take Huma to Singapore and the decision to administer the injection in the air-ambulance was taken by the flight doctors. (ANI)
