Islamabad, Jan 25 : Pakistan’s pace-bowling legend Wasim Akram has slammed the British press for raising doubts over off-spinner Saeed Ajmal action while delivering ‘doosras’.
Ajmal took a 10-wicket haul in Pakistan’s impressive 10-wicket win over world number one Test team England in the Dubai Test, and Akram expressed his anger that the media was after the bowler instead of praising him.
“Instead of praising him (Ajmal) for he is someone special, instead of admitting their team didn’t do well and Pakistan played better cricket, they are after him,” the Daily Times quoted him, as saying.
“It’s not funny anymore, it’s boring, stale and old,” Akram added.
Slamming the England players for their complaints against Ajmal’s bowling style, he said: “Whenever they lose, they talk negative. It’s the English batsmen who played bad shots, sweeping across the line to off-spinner. It’s no rocket science that you can’t play across the line. But probably they don’t know. It’s the job of umpires and the International Cricket Council (ICC) not British media.”
Pakistani wicket-keeper Adnan Akmal had admitted yesterday that he too gets occasionally flummoxed with Ajmal’s disguised ‘doosras’, saying: “I had some trouble keeping on Ajmal’s doosra.”
Former Pakistani bowler Saqlain Mushtaq, however, had defended Ajmal, saying: “There are absolutely no problems with Saeed Ajmal’s bowling action. Bob Willis is not the cricketing authority - it’s the ICC, the umpires and referees who are there to deem whether a bowling action is legal or illegal.”
“Saeed Ajmal has been playing International cricket long enough now for his bowling action to have been thoroughly scrutinised around the world, by all umpire and referees. In addition he played County cricket last season, there was no mention of his bowling action then. I would urge Ajmal not to worry about anything and instead concentrate on bowling well in the remainder of the series,” he added.
Earlier, the country’s interim coach Mohsin Khan also rejected criticism over Ajmal''s bowling action, saying that both he and Ajmal were unfazed by negative remarks. (ANI)
