Vienna - Austrian doctors on Wednesday announced a three-day strike during June's European Football Championships to protest against government health reform plans.
From 16 June onwards, physicians will close their medical practices for three days, doctors' representatives said. Should their demands for changes in the planned reform not be met, further strikes are possible.
The decision will have have to be rubber-stamped at a meeting of the physicians' chamber on June 7.
Football fans in need of medical assistance will have to prepare themselves for very crowded hospital emergency rooms. Hospitals will remain open, but hospital doctors showed solidarity with their colleagues' demands.
Austria's government plans a large-scale health reform - expected to by approved by cabinet in early June - set to bail out the ailing state-controlled health insurances.
The country's doctors on the other hand see their rights infringed - as they will in the future only be granted temporary contracts, will have to undergo quality controls, and will be limited in their choice of drug prescriptions. (dpa)
