Vienna - The Austrian interior ministry early Saturday dismissed a report by US broadcaster ABC that there is a serious al- Qaeda-related terrorist threat against the Euro 2008 championships in Austria and Switzerland, a spokesman said early Saturday.
ABC reported on its website Friday that there was a significant, ongoing terrorist threat for the football championships, possibly to be carried out by Algerian terrorists. The report was based on four unnamed sources from different security, law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
"We have no indication for a concrete threat," Brigadier Konrad Kogler, the Austrian interior ministry's Euro spokesperson, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.
The TV report cited four examples of threats and arrests related to terrorist threats of football events from 2004 to the present.
Kogler said that the examples cited by ABC did not refer to any recent incidents, and all of them had been analyzed by Austrian police.
The hotly contested Euro tournament is finishing up quarter-finals over the weekend, followed by the semi-finals in Austria and Switzerland. (dpa)
