Munich - Bayern Munich's Chief Executive Officer Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said Monday he again expects English clubs to dominate the Champions League, which is starting this week.
He also voiced fears that the Bundesliga would slip further behind.
"The English are, at the moment, ahead of the rest of Europe. Against teams like Manchester, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal the Bundesliga is far behind," he told the German TV station Premiere.
Last season three of the four teams in the Champions League semi- final were from the Premier League and Rummenigge, who is also head of the European Club Association (ECA), said he expects this trend to continue.
"If you look at the potential that these clubs have, it would be a huge sensation if the English clubs did not dominate as they have in recent years.
"I expect Chelsea to be very strong and I consider them as one of the main favourites."
He said German clubs should reconsider their opposition to the rule 50+1, which stipulated that the majority of shares in a club had to belong to the club.
He said that as there were so many big investors in England, German clubs would be advised to be careful. "We must be careful we do not miss the boat."
"I can't see when German clubs can again be part of the top, as they were in the 70s and 80s. There will also be strong new opposition from the East," he said. (dpa)
