Beijing - Three new subway lines were opened in Beijing on Saturday, with less than three weeks to go to the Olympics in the Chinese capital.
The new lines include a link to the airport, and an "Olympic Line" to the main Games venues which until late September will only serve the Olympic Family (athletes, coaches, media and all other accredited people) and ticket-holders for Olympic and Paralympic events.
The Xinhua news agency reported that 22.3 billion yuan (2 billion euros) were spent on the lines, which opened a few weeks behind schedule.
Construction of the new subway lines was an important infrastructure project in the metropolis of 17 million people for the August 8-24 Olympics.
Beijing's subway system is to be used by up to 5 million passengers per day during the Games. Certain lines can be used free of charge by Olympic visitors. (dpa)
