Beijing - The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Saturday dismissed an application by Azerbaijan to be allowed to participate in the women's Olympic field hockey tournament.
The Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee (ANOC) had requested CAS for urgent preliminary measures to allow the country's team to participate at the Olympics at the expense of Spain.
They said that two Spanish players had been guilty of a doping violation during a qualifying tournament in April, which Spain won ahead of Azerbaijan to qualify for the August 8-24 Games.
At the time the Judicial Committee of hockey's governing body FIH ruled that one player was guilty of a doping violation without significant fault or negligence, but exonerated the other.
In a statement CAS said that ANOC had no standing, in light of the FIH Anti-Doping Policy, to request such relief and therefore dismissed the application.
