Clarke needs to hone his Twenty20 abilities: Gillespie

Michael ClarkeMelbourne, Feb 6 : Former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie believes that Twenty20 skipper Michael Clarke is not suited for the shorter version of the sport, but he is still tipping the right-hander to succeed.

Gillespie said it is premature to write Clarke off, insisting that he needs more exposure to Twenty20 if he wanted to lead Australia in the format they are yet to conquer.

“Michael hasn’t actually played a lot of Twenty20 cricket. I think he can be in the best side, but I am not sure he has played enough Twenty20 cricket. He needs to play more,” The Daily Telegraph quoted Gillespie, as saying.

Gillespie further said that Clarke has to find a gap in Australia’s busy schedule to hone his Twenty20 abilities.

“Someone as important as Michael Clarke needs to be monitored with his back issues. So, it is a tough one. A lot of other guys have been involved in the Big Bash,” Gillespie said.

“Michael has been involved so much for Australia that he hasn’t played the Big Bash and hasn’t played the Indian Premier League. So, he hasn’t had as much exposure as other guys,” he added.

Clarke’s record in Twenty20 cricket is mediocre in comparison to his records in Tests and one-day matches, and even prompted a call from former Australian batsman Mark Waugh that vice-captain Cameron White would be a better choice as Twenty20 skipper.

The 28-year-old averages 19.63 in the shortest form and scores at just over a run a ball. (ANI)
