Cleared of doping charges, Monika won''t be able to participate in Olympics

Monika DeviNew Delhi, Aug 10 : Indian female weightlifter Monika Devi, who was cleared of dope charges yesterday, won''t be able to participate in 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, because of shortage of time to re-open the entry process for her.

While talking to ANI, Manipur Sports Minister L. Biren Singh said all doping charges against Monika have been cleared by the Sports Authority of India (SAI).

"Doping charges have been dropped against her, but the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) won''t be able to send her to Beijing on the ground that time is very short and they won''t be able to re-open the entry process for her," Singh said.

Monika was withdrawn from the Indian contingent after she failed dope test earlier this week. She tested positive for "anabolic" salt in a test conducted on June 29 and was withdrawn from the squad before her departure to Beijing.

Hailing from Manipur, Monika was the lone weightlifter in the 56-member strong contingent to represent India in the 69-kg female category at the Beijing Olympics, which begin from August 8.

Earlier this year, she won a silver and two bronze medals in the Asian Championships in Japan to book the berth for India in Olympics. In July, she beat Shailaja Pujari of Andhra Pradesh in the pre-Olympic trial conducted by Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF). (ANI)
