Cologne, Germany - Cologne captain Umit Ozat has recovered after collapsing on the pitch in his side's 2-0 Bundesliga victory at SC Karlsruhe on Friday evening.
The 31-year-old defender was kept in hospital overnight but was expected to return to Cologne on Saturday.
Ozat suddenly fell to the ground midway through the first half. He had lost consciousness and swallowed his tongue.
Fellow players were clearly shocked as doctors treated him on the pitch before he was stretchered off and taken to hospital.
"He was lying completely motionless on the ground, and his pulse came for a bit and then went again," Karlsruhe team doctor Marcus Schweizer said.
Cologne coach Christoph Daum visited the Ozat in hospital after the match and said the player had fully recovered.
"I again saw the fighter in Umit. He couldn't wait to get back on the pitch. He was more concerned with the team than his own health," he said.
Promoted Cologne won the match 2-0 for their first league victory of the season. (dpa)
