Cologne, Leverkusen face fines over flares

Frankfurt - German Bundesliga clubs Bayer Leverkusen and Cologne could be fined by the German Football Federation (DFB) after flares and firecrackers landed on the pitch in Friday's derby match between the sides.

The DFB's control panel has called for a 23,000-euro (29,500 dollars) fine to be imposed on Cologne and a 10,000-euro fine to be paid by Leverkusen.

The clubs have until midday Monday to respond.

The missiles were fired from the Cologne fan section at Leverkusen's BayArena ground in the direction of a linesman and a Leverkusen player.

Cologne also face a higher fine because of an incident at the team's home match against Bayern Munich in September when an empty cup was thrown towards a linesman, the control panel said. (dpa)
