Cologne, Germany - Bundesliga leaders Schalke 04 slipped to their first league defeat of the season when they went down 1-0 to promoted Cologne on Friday.
Lebanese defender Youssef Mohamad settled the game with a 43rd-minute header from a long throw-in by Pierre Wome.
Schalke came close to rescuing a point when Halil Altintop headed against the inside of the post in the final minute but Cologne held on for a deserved victory.
Schalke stay top of the table on 11 points but could be overtaken Saturday when several contenders are in action. Cologne move up to 11th on seven points.
Three clubs are a point behind Schalke including promoted Hoffenheim who visit Werder Bremen, VfB Stuttgart, who are at Borussia Dortmund, and SV Hamburg, at home to Borussia Moenchengladbach.
Wolfsburg, on nine points and visiting Karlsruhe on Sunday, are the only side left with an unbeaten league record.
Champions Bayern Munich, on eight points, travel to Hanover Saturday. (dpa)
