Danish side Aalborg to appeal red card of wrong player

Copenhagen - Danish side Aalborg BK are expected to appeal against a red card handed to one its players in the Champions League tie Wednesday away to Celtic, reports said Thursday.

Italian referee Matteo Trefoloni sent off Michael Beachamp instead of Michael Jakobsen with some 10 minutes left of the goalless match at Celtic Park.

Aalborg sports director Lynge Jakobsen told the online site sporten. dk that the team would appeal, and "we will see what happens."

"It was a clear mistake, the wrong player got the card, everyone knows that," Jakobsen said, adding that "we owe that" to Beauchamp.

Former Danish referee Kim Milton Nielsen said that a protest from Aalborg to European football's ruling body UEFA will likely clear Australian defender Beauchamp but "more importantly, Michael Jakobsen will not be punished either," Nielsen told broadcaster TV3+.

Jakobsen said he was surprised over the referee's decision and was "sorry on behalf of Michael (Beauchamp)."

Beauchamp, who made his fourth appearance for the Danish team, said he was "upset that this could happen at this level."

According to Beauchamp, the Italian referee also asked the players who had committed the foul on Georgios Samaras before making his decision.

The Danish team's goalkeeper Karim Zaza won accolades for his performance, saving a penalty from Celtic's Barry Robson. (dpa)
