David Silva to stay at Valencia

David Silva to stay at ValenciaMadrid  - Valencia reached an agreement Wednesday to improve the contract of Spain midfielder David Silva, thus securing that the playmaker stays at the club.

Valencia Vice President Fernando Gomez confirmed the deal at a press conference at Mestalla stadium.

Fan favourite Silva will reportedly go on to earn just over 2 million euros (close to 3 million dollars) a year for each of the five years for which his contract ties him to Valencia. If he wants to break his contract unilaterally, the player would have to pay the Spanish club 90 million euros (134 million dollars).

The midfielder was one of the stars of the Spain team that won the Euro 2008 in June. Several top European clubs - including Barcelona, Manchester United and Roma - were reportedly interested in signing him.

Gomez praised Silva for his will to remain at Valencia.

"Silva feels he is important here. Whatever the options he may have, he wants to remain with us, and we want to thank him for that," the club official said.

Gomez admitted that Valencia will now seek a similar deal with star striker David Villa, another player who has been the object of many rumours in the preseason. (dpa)
