Northern Ireland defender George McCartney rejoined Sunderland from West Ham Monday, as the transfer window entered its final hours.
McCartney, who has joined for an undisclosed fee, has signed a five-year contract.
He becomes manager Roy Keane's tenth signing of the summer.
"I've made no secret of the positions I've been looking to strengthen and a left-back was one of my priorities, I'm delighted," said Keane.
"George's experience will prove invaluable and he shouldn't take long to settle in as he knows a lot of the lads already and obviously he knows the club inside out."
McCartney revealed he was returning north for family reasons.
Elsewhere, the major moves saw Real Madrid accepting a 32.5- million-pound bid (58.1 million dollars) from Manchester City for Robinho, while Dimitar Berbatov has gone to Old Trafford for a medical pending a probable move to Manchester United. (dpa)
