Disgraced coach Trevor Graham convicted of lying in doping probe

San Francisco  - Trevor Graham, who coached Olympic star Marion Jones and world record-holder Tim Montgomery, was convicted Thursday of lying to federal investigators in the BALCO doping case.

A jury in federal court in San Francisco found that Graham was lying when he denied being acquainted with a confessed steroids trafficker. The 12-person panel was unable to reach a unanimous decision on two other counts.

The federal probe into the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative has be ongoing for five years.

Graham is the 10th person to be convicted in the case, including eight who pleaded guilty to various counts.

The original federal raid that started the probe was sparked when a sample of a designer steroid, for which there was no test at the time, was sent by Grahan anonymously to the US Anti-Doping Agency.

His defence lawyer portrayed graham as a whistleblower who was made a scapegoat. (dpa)
