Amsterdam - A Dutch women's football team which played a match in a semi-skirt has received backing for their attire from the national football association.
KNVB spokesman Rob de Leede told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa on Tuesday it would approach the International Football Association Board (IFAB) for approval for the skirt.
It came after women's amateur football team FC De Rakt from the town of Uden in the southern Netherlands Sunday caused controversy by playing an important game wearing the new garb.
According to football's official dress code, men and women must play the game wearing shorts.
After disapproval from KNVB, De Rakt's coach and players on Monday revealed that they were in fact wearing shorts covered with a skirt - a so-called sliding skirt.
"We find this more feminine. A more feminine garb will improve the image of women's football," a player said.
De Leede said the KNVB would ask IFAB, which is responsible for determining the laws of the game, for a formal adjustment of the dress code regulations for women. (dpa)
